The STEM Education for Empowerment Project (STEEP) recently introduced its values to adolescent girls in grades 9 to 12 across our four partner high schools in Addis Ababa. The schools: Kokebe Tsibah Secondary & Preparatory School, Dejazmach Wondirad Preparatory School, Menelik II Secondary School, and Tesfa Birhan Secondary School, welcomed the STEEP team as they presented the activities designed to empower young women through STEM education.

The introduction sessions, held in each of the four schools, were met with enthusiasm. The STEEP team presented the program’s vision: to equip girls in grades 9–12 with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to pursue STEM education and careers.

During the presentations, the team outlined the comprehensive activities that await the girls. These include:

Specialized Tutorials: Tailored lessons in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and ICT, designed to strengthen foundational skills and prepare students for national examinations.

Interactive Workshops: Hands-on STEM activities that encourage creativity and problem-solving, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific concepts.

Field Visits: Opportunities to visit STEM-related workplaces and institutions, providing real-world insights and inspiring career aspirations.

Digital Learning: Access to the HaHu Muya platform, an innovative digital resource offering interactive STEM content, study tools, and national exam simulations.

Mentorship: Guidance from experienced STEM professionals who will serve as role models and provide career advice.

The introduction sessions were not just about presenting the program; they were also an opportunity to engage with the girls, answer their questions, and address their aspirations. Many students expressed excitement about participating in different activities offered by the STEEP project. Teachers and school administrators also voiced their support, recognizing the potential of the project to transform the educational landscape for girls in their schools.

The success of these sessions was made possible through the collaboration of STEEP’s partners, including, the Yeka Subcity Education office and local school officials. Their collective efforts ensured that the program’s introduction was seamless and impactful.

As the STEEP project advances, the team is dedicated to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where every girl feels empowered to pursue her STEM dreams. The initial introduction sessions set the stage for upcoming activities, including a tutoring program across all four schools, launching on March 1st. This program aims to provide specialized tutorials, interactive workshops, field visits, digital learning resources, and mentorship, all designed to enhance the girls' skills and confidence in STEM.
